K. Hovnanian and city team up to use eminent domain
Despite the Supreme Court's ruling in Connecticut,
principled politicians would never hurt a citizen in
order to benefit a private developer. Yet, that's
exactly what the Trenton City Council has voted to
do
in a 5-2 vote last night (5/18).
Councilmembers Milford Bethea and Annette Lartigue made the hard but principled vote against the administration but were overwhelmed by the Mayor's rubber stamps: Pintella, Staton, Segura and Ungrady (all of whom have received campaign help from Mayor Palmer). When I first reviewed the Hovnanian plan, I though it was good development and still do. However as I went through the Leewood Village debacle and heard from others in Trenton that have been victimized by the city's use of eminent domain, I've changed my tune. I can not imagine why Hovnanian needs to take away people's homes and yards when they've been given probably the biggest and best development site in Trenton (right on Riverfront Park). The principle here is "do unto others as you would have them do unto you". How would you like it if a developer got your town's help in taking away your land. Some of our politicians are saying "eminent domain is a last resort", as if they're only half shooting property owners in the heart. If there is a credible threat that the tool will be used, it's just the same as using it. Shame on the "rubber stamps" for trying to spin this project like that. Trenton voters on this list have an opportunity to take a principled stand and vote out the incumbents in our run-off election and vote in Jim Carlucci, Jim Coston and Kathy McBride. All three are running for office to make sure Trenton does the right things, not just the expedient thing. |

Project wins an historic renovation award
My friends at Westend Development have just about
completly rented out or sold all of their units.
The building is "rent to own" and a few of the
residents have purchased. There is ONE unit left so
hurry.
Meanwhile, Westend has received an award for their historic preservation work from the city. They deserve it as the project was big, the building was old and they kept its historical integrity intact. Congratulations to Rich Tola and his team! |

"A Stone Carver" opens and the Passage Benefit benefits
Peabody Award-winning author William Mastrosimone
(The Afghan Women, Bang Bang You're Dead and
TNT's Into the West) opens his play "A Stone Carver"
on May 25. Ironically the play deals with Eminent
Domain but also with a generational struggle between
father and son. Michelle and I will be there.
On June 10 Passage is holding a benefit at The Conduit. Cabaret chanteuse Mary Cleere Haran returns to Passage for the third year in a row, following a sensational engagement at New York's Hotel Carlyle. Michelle is a co-chair for the event so I hope all of the local Trenton Lofts readers will support her and our great professional theatre. |
