September 2007 Trenton Lofts Newsletter
Real Estate, Arts & Politics
Dear Dan,
This month's newsletter is going to read more like a blog and less like a real estate update. I don't know what to say except that perhaps the turmoil in the real estate market has slowed things down. Anyhow, I hope you enjoy the poltical and "things to do" articles.
Broad St. Bank
  Still Not Open
I went to a briefing on the BsB two weeks ago. The sales guy said it would open by today (9/19).

Fraid not.

Trenton Lofts in Denmark

We've had a few vacancies in the Trenton Lofts apartments and by now several of you have gone through them. It looks like 324 S. Broad is rented. 6 Peace #1 has been fixed up and is ready to go.

The tenant in 6 Peace #2 has moved out and we've got some work to do. If you're interested, you'll need to imagine new carpet and fresh paint. 8 Peace #2 will hopefully be ready soon but I don't think it will need a lot of work.

Complicating all this is that our realtor, John Lamb, is on his annual month-long trip to Denmark. He's on email though and has back-up.

Hurry back John!

Trenton's Political War
  The Administration Strikes Back
If you're a long time Trenton Lofts reader, you know that development projects sometimes go nowhere in Trenton. Our most famous, "stuck in the mud" project is the Trenton Town Center project which includes the Bell Telephone Building. It's going nowhere as have many other large projects over the years.

Finally, one of our more thoughtful civic activists, Zac Chester, decided to start asking questions about the failed projects. Specifically, he asked about former Economic Development Director and current Assistant Business Administrator Dennis Gonzalez's role.

You might think this is innocent enough, but what happened next was simply startling. Gonzalez threatened citizen Chester with a lawsuit and with the Mayor's blessing. Essentially, the public official is threatening the citizen for asking questions about Trenton's economic development activities, or lack thereof. Wow!

Since then, a new web site, missingmayor.com, has sprung up to question the city's policy as well. I guess more lawsuits will be coming.

Here are the Trenton Times Article on the issue and my Letter to the Editor. Trenton Times Article My Letter to the Editor

Here's the missingmayor.com article on those big projects.

Update on Golden Swan Lofts

Here's an update on the Golden Swan from John Hatch, the architect on the project.

There will be three apartments available (the fourth space is already leased). They range in size from: Apt 1. 1,412 sf, three bedrooms; Apt 2. 731 sf, one bedroom; Apt 3. 1003 sf, one bedroom. They are each two stories with a double height space, cool dormer windows and a lot of character (exposed beams, some exposed brick, etc.).

Here's a recent article on The Golden Swan from the Trenton Times:

The Funky 449 Room

Perhaps one of Trenton's most unique locations is the 449 Room at 449 S. Broad St. They've got rock on Sundays, "Open Mic" on Mondays, poker nights, and various bands. 449 Room is a music venue, but it's attached to the Greenlight Restaurant, a vegetarian restaurant which also has a bar. The whole complex is next door to the Conduit and across the street from the Sovereign Bank Arena.

If you're a music fan, this is one of those funky little spots that you find in cities but not in suburbs.
